Seward & Exit Glacier
Margaret is our fantastic Alaska tour guide. She suggested that we go to Seward and visit the Alaska Sealife Center. Along with Margaret we were accompanied by a future Marine Biologist named Lauren. Lauren and Katie were fancinated by the touch tank, even though the water in the tank was just above freezing cold.
We also got up close and personal with some great sea birds. Here is one of the very cute puffins that live at the center. They had sea lions and harbor seals and salmon and lots of other animals. But my favorite by far was the birds. You could get very close to them in the viewing area. Then go downstairs and view the tank from below. You could see their feet paddling along in the water and then watch them dive for fish. It was the coolest.
Next we visited Exit Glacier. After a nice hike we got very close to the Glacier.
During the hike back down, we realized that Lauren is a rare mutant, being part mountain goat. She thought the trail was for sissies and would disappear and pop out in the strangest places. When she popped up on these rocks, I thought it was such a cool back drop with the valley behind that I ordered poor Katie to climb the rocks and pose for a picture. Katie is a very good sport.
It was a very enlightening afternoon for all of us. Lauren, the speed demon, would get so far ahead of us that it gave her some extra time to meditate. Hopefully she was thinking nice thoughts about her slow companions, or she was just trying to figure out a way to speed us up.
