Skagway

This is the port that we have been waiting for! Skagway is beautiful and quaint. When our ship pulled in the clouds had lifted and the views were breathtaking.

One of the first things that we noticed was the paintings on the rocks alongside the dock. They were of different ship's emblems, listing the years and Captains. Originally these were painted by the ship's first mate when a ship pulled in. A stick was pushed into the rock and that's where they hung the ship's mail. Later, as mail delivery became more sophisticated it was a matter of pride for the ships that came into Skagway and so the painting continues.

This is the most photographed building in all of Alaska with more than 70,000 pieces of driftwood nailed to the outside.

Also popular in Skagway is the totem pole. Katie posed with this handsome group. Now the question is can you spot Katie in this picture?

Skagway has many historic buildings especially in the business district in town. If you look at historic photos of Skagway you will see that most of the buildings are the same since Skagway is one of the only towns to escape a major fire.

Katie stands on Lookout Point, looking back down to the town and docks. That big ship were are on looks dwarfed by the awesome geography of the area.
